Chapter 20

“Skinwalker, you ok?” whispered Noel.

“Held down by fire, ‘bout as well as can be expected, friend.” He fired his gun, quickly rolled away.

Noel did the same and rolled the other way. Gunfire concentrated on where they were a few seconds earlier. In the meantime, Noel had slithered around and was by Skinwalker side again.

“We got to take out that nest,” he said.

“I’d agree. How 'bout you just sort of fly over and drop a bomb?”

“Got no bombs nor wings. However, got some tricks taught me by old Storyteller. You keep me covered.”

“Wait, you’re going where?”

“Left-just keep up camo firing. Ready? OK, on my count, one, two, three, now.” Noel rolled under bushes, then crawled as Skinwalker, Malcom’s youngest son fired erratically, moved, drew fire towards himself. Noel stayed low and quiet, and circled the platoon of cong. He worked his way inward, tree to tree, bush to bush. He took a long heavy stick and a shoelace from his boot. He tied a grenade to the stick, set the end of the stick in the lace, pulled the pin and then swung the home made atlatl up and flung the stick. It landed in the midst of the platoon and blew. He hit the ground, holding his shoulder where a piece of flying metal debris had embedded itself. The cong nest went quiet.

In the ensuing silence, marines ran up and finished the cleanup of the enemy. Skinwalker joined his cousin.

“Even for a half gone boonie nut that was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, son. Here, let me get a bandage on that, don’t think I better pull it out. Just let me tie this. Yes. They got our medic. You’ll have to contend with me.”

“We still have to take the hill.”

“Not you, bro. You gotta go back to camp.”

Noel slumped. “Why are we doing this?”

“Hell, if I know. I’d rather have a beer and an egg and be sitting in a pub and I don’t even drink. Here, can I help you back behind the lines? It’s quiet a minute, nah, there go the flash bangs again. Can you roll?”

“I don’t think so. Shh.”

They heard someone coming through the brush. They were not speaking English. They were speaking quietly in the bush, trying to sneak in back of the Marines ascending the hill. They heard a gasp and realized they were killing the wounded as they came. Noel quietly pulled his knife. Skinwalker laid down his gun, and took out a slingshot. He loaded something into it, put a finger to his lips and slipped away as Noel pulled himself behind a tree and waited. There was a sudden shriek, and it got still. Skinwalker returned.

“Think it's safe enough to leave now,” he said quietly.

“What was that?”

“Little thing I learned from an aborigine. These darts have a poison that kills fast but it’s not so comfortable-feels like a heavy duty wasp for about 30 seconds, then the heart stops. There were two of them. Now there’s none. I scouted around.
